A practical approach to doll care and storage

Use the exact maker’s instructions, keep handling gentle and check the doll’s construction before choosing any cleaning method.

Start with the maker’s instructions

Keep the care instructions supplied with the doll and note the exact model. Material, paint, hair and cloth sections can require different treatment, so one general cleaning routine will not suit every doll. Before applying a cleaner, asking whether it is suitable for the finished product is more useful than checking only the main material. If instructions are missing, request them rather than experimenting on a visible surface.

Make gentle handling a habit

Support the doll when lifting it and avoid pulling on hair, fingers or decorative attachments. For ordinary dust, follow the maker’s recommended gentle method and use clean equipment. Do not assume a cloth body, an internal mechanism or attached accessories can be immersed. Hair also needs its own instructions: a routine intended for rooted fibres may not suit painted hair or a wig. Check before brushing, wetting or applying a product.

Choose a sensible storage place

Keep the doll away from prolonged direct sunlight and avoid contact with pens or markers. Store the outfit and small accessories together so nothing is lost during changes. Choose a stable place where the doll will not fall or be compressed. Inspect stored items occasionally, and ask about unfamiliar marks or damage before trying a stronger cleaning method.
